Aran Islands, Ireland

© Barry Thomas Hendrickson

This early Christian oratory (Teampall Bheanáin) overlooks Cill Éinne Bay on the southeast end of the island of Inishmore. Named for a disciple of St. Patrick, St. Benen’s Church measures only 7 x 11 ft. Built in the 6th century, this stone church has witnessed the arrival of the early Christians, the Vikings, the Normans and the English.
